On Thursday, May 19, 2016 we had a practice for our annual spring musical. This year it's about a trip from Route 66 with two boys named Jude and Paul. Patrick plays Jude and Paul is Xavier. When the boys have something gone wrong with their car they have no idea how they're gonna get to Jude's brother who's visiting from the navy in Texas. But then, a whole gang of motorcycles come and swirl around them, jump off their bikes and ask them if they need help, but bust up their car even worse. After that, these girls come in with a pretty teal car and their dresses sort of like how'd you'd dress for coachella. And those girls asked them if they needed a lift and so the girls took them and went to one of the main character's house, Jenny, which is played by Emily. Jenny then asks her dad if he can fix Jude's car. Aside from that Jenny asks Jude if he could sing, and he can. They ask him this because they want to join a contest and the grand prize gets to go on a tour. So, they practice, and practice, and practice. But then suddenly, Jenny's dad fixed the car extremely quick. So Jude decides to ditch the girls and go to his brother in Texas. After Jude's made a mistake of going there half way, getting stuck on the road, and meets this odd man, he decided to go back and sing with the girls. At first they were hesitant, but then they accepted him. Overall I think that the play is great, although there are a few minor mistakes. All that matters is that everyone enjoyed it and had fun. I learned that life is too short to be afraid.
Many important and notorious people in the world have stated how much teamwork effects things. Someone once said that yourself is one drop, but with other people in the world it'll be a whole ocean. So many inspirations in this world have shown teamwork in a lot of ways. A good example is Michael Jordan. He was an amazing basketball player, but without his whole team he wouldn't be anywhere right now. He most likely will not be able to play a basketball game with one person. Imagine playing a whole basketball game with one player, it would be five on one and you would be exhausted by the end. For all you know, you would faint or get injured by how exhausted and weak you are. A lot of Catholic inspirations show and tell us collaboration is important. I mean look at Jesus, he worked with his disciples and mother and father all his life. See how important collaboration and cooperation are important? Without others you would struggle to get where you want to be.
This week in English Language Arts class Mrs. Todesco, we continued working on our Student Learning Expectations, also known as, SLE's. My SLE is about teamwork, collaborating with others, cooperating with others, and more importantly why collaborations and teamwork is important in all life. I spoke of how teamwork is everywhere in life. Every single day you are working with someone. You could be working with a friend, a family member, or even God. When you are in school, you are most likely going to be working with other human beings a lot. If you are married, you are always working with another person. If you play sports you will most definitely be working with more people. See how collaboration and cooperation are very important in your life? Group work will be everywhere you go at anytime. A few days ago during literature class we had no boys. While we were with our teacher, Mrs. Todesco, the boys were being shown a presentation from Helen Rossi. Class was better and more fun without them. We did several things, but the one more important thing that was the most related to the actual subject was annotating about three poems. These poems were about women and what they are. The reason why she did this with us was because we also were shown a presentation by Helen Rossi, and this presentation was about this. One of the poems was about a woman's worth, another one was about a little girls mom who was dead, and the last one was about a group of girls chilling by the pool on summer. It was fun having a time to be in a class with no boys to bother you. We were able to do many girl things that we normally wouldn't do in a regular class. The one poem about a woman's worth was cool because it compared hips to everyday things. The author was personifying the while poem, I found it very interesting. The next poem we read was kind of sad. It was about a little girl looking through this closet full of all girly things. The closet was her moms. She was trying to find out more things about her mom just sitting there and looking. Soon her dad went over and just colored the closet door. I assumed her mom was dead because from prior knowledge, when there is afloat full of items from mothers that your father doesn't want you to touch, he is trying to preserve it. The father wants to keep it safe for memories. The last poem we read were about sixteen year olds not caring about anything. All they were doing were relaxing and tanning by the pool. That was what we did today during literature class.
On Tuesday, April 12th we watch a video in class called, "The One Who Remembered." It was about a woman named Gerda Weissman and what she went through during the time when Jews weren't treated nicely. A scene that was most powerful for me would be hearing her say that she wanted to kill herself, she wanted to end her life, but she didn't because she made a promise to her father that she wouldn't ever kill herself. This thought me that even though times are rough, I should never result to killing myself. Nazis dehumanized Jews by sending them off to concentration camps. Gerda overcame it by listening to her family and friends. If I were taken away I would fantasize about the things I could be doing right now and how my life isn't fair and why out of all the people they could've taken away, why did it have to be me. The ordinary things I would take for granite are my family, friends, shelter, food, and water. I see persecution happening when someone does something terribly wrong, but as a Catholic I know that killing people is not the best way to fix things. Groups I see being targeted are people who stand by their religion and people who have done horrible crimes. As a Catholic I can pray to God and ask for his help and love throughout the world. The heroes of the film would be the lieutenant and Gerda's father. They made me hopeful because it helped me realize that good people are surrounding me for help when I need it. In this video I learned to be thankful for the life that I have right now and I should cherish every moment that I am happy because I would never know when something good can go wrong.
This week we are watching the movie To Kill a Mockingbird. I am so far really enjoying the movie because I am a very visual person and I do not like books. I really like this movie because it gets a lot more detail in a lot shorter time than the book does. I do agree that the books can give more detail but I do enjoy watching the movies better than reading the books. In the movie it leaves out some events that were in the book. One event that was left out was when Scout was in class and the teacher saw something crawl out of Burris Ewells hair. I think that was an important event because it helped us show who the Ewells are. One part that was similar but different in the movie was when Scout, Jem, and Dill snuck into the Radley’s yard and when they ran they saw a shadow but in the book Nathan Radley came out and shot his shot gun and this time when Jem went back for his pants Nathan Radley shot. Another big event that was really left out was when the kids when the kids went to Calpurnia’s church and met Reverend Sykes and other people. They did not include that in the movie and I think that was a very important event because in the movie they meet with Reverend Sykes and if you’ve never read the book people would not know who the who he is and how they met him. Overall I enjoyed the movie and the book but I still enjoy movies over books because it takes less time to get a story explained. I really enjoyed the movie and can’t wait to read the next book and figure out what the story’s about.
Word Counter: 300 This week in ELA we were introduced to the new filming program. It was actually really interesting. The man from the production came to our school and taught us about so many things like pre-production, production, and post-production. Then after we broke into our group which went well. We came up with ideas for our film. The film has to be only three minutes long and only three minutes. I was really hoping we would get a lot more time to work on our film, because although we have six weeks which is a lot of time, for me personally it's not a lot because it's only on Thursdays for one hour so if you think about we only have about six hours to work on a three minute film. Even though its only three minutes long I still think it's a lot of work because I have never filmed something before and we have to get things situated and organized. But if they do give us more time it would be better. So far, we have just came up with some things about what our film should be about. Which is going to stay a secret :). We will be shooting using only apple devices, not including laptops or iMacs. We will be shooting on iPhones and iPads. After we do our filim and etc. we will be having a mini movie festival at our school, except the students have to vote on the best one they think and the chosen one(s) will be sent and will be able to go to the Valley Performing Arts at CSUN. Overal,l I am really looking forward to learn new things about flim and cinimatography . Not only that, I am so thankful to be able to do amazing things like this for my education.
Word Counter: 302 Verbs are a necessary component of all sentences. Verbs have two important functions: Some verbs put stalled subjects into motion while other verbs help to clarify the subjects in meaningful ways. Look at the examples below:
My grumpy old English teacher smiled at the plate of cold meatloaf. My grumpy old English teacher = stalled subject; smiled = verb. The important thing to remember is that every subject in a sentence must have a verb. Otherwise, you will have written a fragment, a major writing error. Many words in English have more than one function. Sometimes a word is a noun, sometimes a verb, sometimes a modifier. As a result, you must often analyze the job a word is doing in the sentence. Look at these two examples: Potato chips crunch too loudly to eat during an exam. The crunch of the potato chips drew the angry glance of Professor Orsini to our corner of the room. Crunch is something that we can do. We can crunch cockroaches under our shoes. We can crunch popcorn during a movie. We can crunch numbers for a math class. In the first sentence, then, crunchis what the potato chips do, so we can call it a verb. Even though crunch is often a verb, it can also be a noun. The crunch of the potato chips, for example, is a thing, a sound that we can hear. You therefore need to analyze the function that a word provides in a sentence before you determine what grammatical name to give that word. Dance! Sing! Paint! Giggle! Chew! What are these words doing? They are expressing action, something that a person, animal, force of nature, or thing can do. As a result, words like these are called action verbs. Word Counter: 300 This week in ELA we were assigned to make an oral speech in front of some classmates about poetry. Our teacher handed us a packet about poetry and there was a bunch of questions on there that we had to answer after we had read some poems from different authors. The final question, we were asked to choose one question but answer it in depth and we would be speaking about it in front of our teacher and some classmates. I personally think that this was a great idea to do because in the future when we are at our jobs or in fact just when we are olde in general trying to get into high schools and colleges or during high school and college we will have to do a lot of oral speaking and it is key to be good and improve on them since middle school. I thought this was a great idea to do because our teacher gave us some tips and tricks on how to be a good oral speaker, you have to make sure to be confident and to not be scared. Make sure to always keep eye contact and to not use fillings while talking. You have to sound like you know what you are talking about because you will sound more professional and better.I obviously should take my own advice because during my presentation, I didn't do as well as I had hoped. I really thought that I was going to do well and that I wasn't going to be as nervous. It turns out that I was extremely nervous, not only that I said umm and uhh a lot. WHich is something I really didn't want to do. If I could redo my presentation I would because I know that I could've done better. I personally think that I didn't do so well was because I didn't have a note card in front of me and I was too confident. It's one thing being confident, and its another thing being too confident. I defiantly learned a lot from this experience and I hope to to better in other presentations, especially my SLE presentation which seems far away, but really isn't.
Word Counter: 370 Tomorrow is Saint Paula Montal Day. "Saint Paula Montal Fornes was a Catalan religious founder of the Sisters of Escolapias Pious Schools. Montal Fornes was born into a family of craftsmen simple, large, complex and very Christian. He spent his childhood and youth in his native town, working from 10 years to the death of his father, as Puntaires-lace and actively engaged in parish catechetical ministry with children and young people. In 1829, at age 30, founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary, Sisters of the Pious Schools, opened in Figueras (Gerona) a school for girls. A school of seven other foundations followed Figueras personal. He died in Olesa de Montserrat (Barcelona), February 26, 1889." (Source: http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=7577) On this day we would go to church and celebrate Saint Paula Montal, which is hosted by the fourth grade. I remeber when I wasin fourth grade, we learned the songs in Spanish that wastought not only by our music teacher, but our regular teacher, Sister Encarnacion. After she left (we were her last class) the tradition of singing the song in Spanish has sort of faded. Not fully, but before everyone knew the song and would sing along. But now a days, not so often anymore which is really sad. I remeber learning Somos El Cuerpo De Christo and another Saint Paula Montal song that I can't remember. Until now I still remeber a little bit of both songs, but not a lot.
Not only did we sing amazing songs in rememberance of Saint Paula Montal, we also did fun outdoor activities. For example, in elementary we used to do field day which is basically like jump rope for heart, except in jump rope for heart, your doing it for a cause. Then after, we would get a popsicle and enjoy the rest of our day. Now a days, I don't think we do that anymore which is really a bum because as a little kid (I still consider myself a kid even though I'm fourteen) I would look forward to feild day because we would do so many activities like jumprope, hula-hoop, and obstacle courses that had me so excited every year. I hope to learn more things about her when we go to mass tomorrow and carry on the traditions we started to commemerate her. Word Counter: 413 This week it was a four day week at school since there was no school on Monday. There was no school on Monday because it was President's Day. We should respect all of our presidents even if they passed away. They all helped The United States of America at one time is American history. Either they did something no one could forget or they are respected. Soon we are going to vote for a new president, that president is already being respected in their voting campaign. Last week in Social Studies class we made posters on how the president is elected and how you can become a president. I worked with my friend and we made a beautiful poster and its title was How is the President Elected. We have facts about it such as that you have to be a natural born citizen in the United States to become president. Two other things that are important are that you must be over the age of thirty-five. The final thing that you should know is that you have to live in the United States for over or fourteen years. Those are only three things that you need to be elected for president. There are more but I am only writing some. In the future I am not going to be running for president but I know that I will be voting for a president for a president that I will like when I am old enough to vote. This blog is related to English because when we were doing rotations I thought about why we didn’t have school on Monday because of President’s Day. I hope everyone thought about the presidents in the past, present and future. Our president right now is President Barack Obama. I appreciate all the presidents for their hard work and their dedication to their jobs.
